When it comes to sustainability in the workplace we tend to think about the bigger things like our consumption of energy, choice of furniture or the technology we use. And while they’re no doubt important, there are also smaller things that can make a big difference right down to the desk accessories we choose.

Simple steps to take today

1. Consider the things you have on your desk from sticky tape and sticky notes to notepads and even the pen you write with. You can, for instance, reduce chemicals in your workplace by using sticky tapes that are made from 100% FSC certified natural fibre and use plant based adhesives.

2. Similarly, opt for 100% recyclable Post-it® Notes with a plant based adhesive. Considering how many of these we use, this could make a significant difference.

3. Not all calculators add up. The new range of Canon calculators are made from recycled Canon photocopiers and can run on solar power.

4. Consider products that use soy based inks. Because they’re not petroleum based, they make recycling of used paper easier. The Rapid ECO range of staplers, hole punches and tackers for example, use soy based inks on their packaging.

5. Recycled notebooks are now readily available for everyday use. If you’re already using recycled copy paper, this is the natural next step.

6. Not everything goes via email. So if you’re sending something through the post or with a courier use envelopes, mailing bags and labels that are 100% recycled.
