What does ‘carbon neutral’ mean?
“A product can be classified as ‘carbon neutral’ if its manufacturer has accounted for, reduced and offset the direct and indirect greenhouse gases emitted during its production,” says Jennifer Williams, Corporate Express’ Corporate Social Responsibility Manager.

“For Australian Paper, the manufacturer of Reflex Carbon Neutral Copy Paper, this includes not just the paper itself, but the external wrap and the pallets the paper is delivered on,” she adds.

Reflex Laser Carbon Neutral copy paper is the first Australian-made office paper to be certified as Greenhouse Friendly™ by the Australian Government, and to achieve this, they underwent a lengthy and rigorous Life Cycle Analysis, which was verified by an independent third party auditor.  This process involves five steps:

Step One: The organisation must be a member of Greenhouse Challenge Plus, an Australian Government initiative to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.   Members are required to report their emissions on a regular basis, and must commit to developing ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Reflex Laser Carbon Neutral is manufactured at Australian Paper’s Burnie Mill. The mill only uses fibres sourced from plantation and sustainably managed forests,” says Jennifer. “No fibre is sourced from old growth forests, and the mill recycles large amounts of water, uses waste products as energy sources, has a comprehensive marine monitoring program and produces no hazardous by-products – all dioxin emissions have been reduced to zero.”

Step Two: Undertake a Life Cycle Analysis of the product, and produce an annual report and emissions monitoring plan for five years.

“For Australian Paper, this involved establishing the system boundaries of the paper-making process,” says Jennifer, “as well as calculating all emissions associated with the manufacturing of Reflex Laser Carbon Neutral.”

Step Three: Calculate the carbon emissions per tonne of finished product, and purchase carbon offsets for all unavoidable emissions.

“According to Australian Paper, emissions from production have been fully offset by investment in Australian projects that reduce greenhouse gases, and the carbon offsets have been purchased from Greenhouse Friendly™ accredited providers such as AGL and Origin,” says Jennifer.

Step Four: the process is then audited by a Government-approved independent third party.

Step Five: Submit the proposal to the Greenhouse Friendly™ administrator, Snowy Mountains Engineering Company and Department of Climate Change for approval and sign-off.

“Once this has been approved, Australian Paper is entitled to use the Greenhouse Friendly™ logo, which guarantees that the product or service has been through this rigorous certification process.

“But it doesn’t really stop there,” says Jennifer. “It’s very much an iterative process.  Each year Australian Paper is required to produce an annual report, recalculate greenhouse gas emissions for their product and purchase carbon offsets to ensure ongoing accreditation.”

Jennifer believes that the new Reflex Carbon Neutral paper will be particularly attractive to those organisations who are committed to becoming carbon neutral themselves.

“If that’s your strategy, or your goal is to reduce your own carbon emissions, then this is the perfect paper for you. And if you use this paper in your marketing documents, for example, you’re entitled to use the Greenhouse Friendly™ logo, once you have sought and gained approval from Australian Paper.”
