Tips on how to develop the best promotional campaign:
Before starting any promotional marketing activities, take the time to carefully plan your campaign. Ask yourself the following questions:
• Why are you running this promotion? Are sales down in a particular area, or do you want to create awareness of a new product? Understand exactly what it is you’re aiming for…more sales, brand awareness, brand loyalty, etc.
• Are you planning to collect names as leads, or will you offer discounts on items as ‘loss leaders’ to gain a larger customer base?
• Who are you targeting? Your competitor’s customers, existing clients who have not made a purchase for a while, or a new market segment? What are the specific demographics (gender, age, background, location, and so on) of your customers, and how can you best reach them?
• What incentive works best for your target audience? Free samples, competitions, trade show displays, supermarket displays, product seminars, viral marketing…? Remember that a good quality promotional product will be around for years and can be used on a daily basis by your clients, at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising.
• Create an emotional connection – a reason to try, and then buy. Every potential customer wants to know one thing – “what’s in it for me?”
• Is the campaign in line with your values and your corporate culture? Don’t ever cheapen your image…retain your integrity and the integrity of your brand at all times.
• What’s your budget? That will determine whether you opt for direct mail, email, or in-store promotions.
• Link whatever you do back to your company’s website…that gives new customers an opportunity to get to know you better.
• How long will the campaign last, and how will you measure its success?
• Does your promotion comply with State and Federal laws? There are rules around competitions that you need to know – the rules for games of skill are not the same for games of chance. Make sure that your legal department (internal or external) approves your campaign before you launch it.
